Parco delle Biancane, ph. Mikahil Karikis

At the end of his Nuovi Paesaggi residency, exploring the network of connections between the industrial site of Larderello, the mystical land of Dante’s Inferno and the auditory imaginary of Hell, artist Mikhail Karikis presents work in progress developed in the context of his Radio Papesse residency in Villa Romana. He will also talk about the role of sound and the voice in recent projects presented at La Biennale di Venezia 2011 and Manifesta 9, 2012 and his forthcoming solo show at Arnolfini, UK.

Mikhail Karikis is an interdisciplinary artist based in London. His inter-disciplinary practice encompasses sound and video installation, performance art, drawing and music. Karikis's work emerges from his long-standing investigation of the voice as a sculptural material and a conceptual compass, which he employs to explore notions of community and difference, the politics of work and human rights. His art has recently been presented at the Wapping Project, London; Manifesta 9, Genk; the Barbican Theatre, London; and at the Danish Pavilion, 54th Venice Biennale.

He's among the artists participating into the residency program Nuovi Paesaggi, produced by Radio Papesse in collaboration with Villa Romana and curated by Lucia Farinati.
