The audioguide is commissioned by SMS Contemporanea in Siena on the occasion of Francesca Woodman’s retrospective, a grand show comprising almost one hundred photographs and five videos.

Francesca Woodman died by suicide in 1981 at the age of twenty-two. Her blurring figures, obscured faces, her selfportraits, both seducing and sinister, are often misread as premonitions. Nonetheless they are exceptionally beautiful and deserve a closer and more articulate look.

That’s why Radio Papesse interviewed her parents, artists Betty & George Woodman and art historian Rossella Caruso in order to accompany the visitors into Francesca’s realm and life, from her first photograph – taken when she was thirteen – to her roman season, between 1977 and 1978.
